No Money, No FIFA World Cup! China is So Broke, It Can’t Even Afford $120M Broadcast Rights

The 2026 World Cup, hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, will kick off on June 11. However, according to reports from Chinese state media, as of May 5, negotiations for broadcasting rights were still ongoing between China and FIFA. FIFA initially gave CCTV a price between $250-$300 million, but CCTV’s budget might only be around $60-$80 million. Despite several rounds of negotiations, the price was halved, yet there remains a significant gap between the price and CCTV’s expectations.
