Hong Kong student teacher arrested on suspicion of filming female colleague in school restroom

A student teacher has been arrested on suspicion of secretly filming a female colleague in a restroom at a primary school in Hong Kong, the Post has learned.

A police spokesman said on Wednesday the force received a report from a woman on Monday, saying she suspected she had been secretly filmed with a mobile phone in a restroom in Ma On Shan.

The man, who was a student teacher, was suspected to have taken video from above a cubicle in the primary school’s toilet while the woman was inside, a police source said.

The woman screamed after noticing the camera and the suspect fled immediately, the source added.

He said the victim later reviewed security camera footage and contacted police.

After an inquiry, police officers arrested a 21-year-old man in the district on Tuesday on suspicion of unlawful recording or observation of intimate parts. He was being detained.

The suspect began his placement at the school on March 4, while the female teacher was a full-time employee, according to the source.

The case is being handled by a police investigation team from the Sha Tin district.

The Education Bureau said the school had promptly reported the incident and activated a crisis management team, and would provide appropriate counselling and support to any staff or students in need. It said it would maintain close communication with the school and offer necessary assistance.

In cases involving suspected legal offences, the bureau said it would thoroughly scrutinise all relevant information after the judicial process concluded and would review the concerned teacher’s registration.

Even if the teacher was not ultimately convicted, the bureau would consider whether the person’s acts were acceptable from the perspective of students’ well-being and teaching profession and take appropriate action, it said.

In severe cases, it may cancel or refuse the teacher’s registration in accordance with the Education Ordinance, the bureau added.
