On April 16, local time, Maria Elvira Salazar, chair of the U.S. House Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, said at a hearing that Washington would support Peru’s next government in “taking back” the Chancay port. The port is currently being developed and operated by China COSCO Shipping Corporation. Participants at the hearing voiced concern that the port could gain “dual-use” capabilities, serving both civilian and military purposes, and could even become a military threat in the Western Hemisphere.
