At the command of the highest-ranking officer, the combined forces of the Philippine and US armies, navies, and air forces, bearing both Philippine and American flags, launched an attack on the “enemy ship” BRP Lake Caliraya. The vessel was quickly hit by a barrage of anti-ship missiles, rockets, helicopter gunfire, and land-based artillery, catching fire and slowly sinking to the seabed.
