A Hong Kong policeman has been jailed for six months over the “shocking” sexual assault of a female pedestrian earlier this year, with a magistrate slamming him for endangering public safety.

Kowloon City Court on Tuesday sentenced Constable Cheng Yuk-wai on a count of indecent assault for the incident near Diamond Hill railway station in the early hours of February 4.
Cheng, 33, assaulted a 31-year-old woman while she was waiting for a lift at the bottom of a footbridge on Fung Tak Road at around 2.45am.
The court heard how the off-duty officer with 13 years of experience continued to grope the woman after she fell onto the ground and unsuccessfully tried to push and kick him away.
Cheng was subdued by five men outside an exit of the station after the woman gave chase and shouted for help.

Under caution, Cheng denied committing the crime and insisted he was trying to apprehend the suspect.
“I saw that d******d grope her and run away. Then he was subdued by passers-by,” the defendant said.
