Hong Kong police arrest 3 suspected of forgery and theft after seizing 28 stolen identity documents and bank cards

Hong Kong police have arrested three people on suspicion of forgery and theft, after seizing 28 stolen identity documents and bank cards allegedly used for loan applications.

Police revealed on Saturday that officers raided a flat in Hoi Lai Estate of Cheung Sha Wan the previous day, and found two men and a woman as well as 28 documents that did not belong to the trio.

The seized documents included Hong Kong identity cards, mainland China travel permits, bank cards, driving licences and construction safety training certificates.

Officers also confiscated tools believed to be used for making fake documents, including computers, photocopiers, plastic boards, knives and stickers printed with identity photos of different sizes.

According to police, the group stole identity documents through a variety of methods and altered the victim’s photos on these personal belongings.

These documents were then uploaded to the online account opening systems of banks for the purpose of bypassing facial recognition of loan application processes.

Police added that the trio used tools like art supplies and stickers, which resulted in the inferior quality of the fake documents.

Police warned the public to watch their belongings and not to disclose personal information to others.

Forgery is an offence and those convicted face up to 14 years in prison.

Any person convicted of theft faces a maximum of 10 years in prison.
