Hong Kong labourer falls to his death at construction site at Hong Kong hospital

A 30-year-old labourer died after falling from a height and suffering head injuries at a construction site in Hong Kong’s Kwai Chung.

Police received a call at 5.40pm on Thursday and arrived at the construction site of the phase two redevelopment of Kwai Chung Hospital, where they found the male foreman on the ground. They suspected he fell from a height.

He sustained massive head trauma and was certified dead on the spot.

Director of Architectural Services Michael Li Kiu-yin said he was “deeply saddened by the passing … and expressed his deepest condolences to the deceased’s family.”

He has also requested the contractor to provide assistance to the family.

The department said it was still investigating the cause of the death and that all related work would be suspended until it could be confirmed the contractor had implemented all necessary measures to ensure construction safety.

The Labour Department said it was aiding with the investigation.

Hong Kong’s construction sector ‘must improve safety culture to reduce deaths’

Commenced in 2019 and expected to be completed in 2025, the second and third phases of the hospital’s redevelopment includes demolishing a number of existing buildings and the construction of a new main block and one for children.

Earlier this month, a 64-year-old worker died after collapsing at a construction site in Tuen Mun, where he remained undiscovered for seven hours.

In February, two women workers died after bamboo scaffolding collapsed at a 30-storey building in Kai Tak.
