Hong Kong braces for ‘intense’ thunder and showers, with rainy conditions expected through to next week

Hongkongers should brace for “intense” thunder and showers on Thursday, with the Observatory predicting rainy conditions to carry on into next week.

The forecaster issued two special weather notices in the morning, saying a band of intense thunder, wind and heavy showers over western Guangdong province was gradually moving eastward.

“Members of the public should be on the alert,” said the Observatory, predicting the rain to hit the city at midday.

Hong Kong will be mainly cloudy and hot during the day with a maximum temperature of about 31 degrees Celsius (87.8 Fahrenheit), with a few showers and isolated thunderstorms.

The Observatory said rain and hot weather during the daytime were expected over the coastal areas of Guangdong in the next couple of days.

A trough of low pressure will bring “unsettled weather” to southern China, bringing occasionally heavy showers with squally thunderstorms as it edges closer to coastal areas early next week.

The conditions would continue through to midweek, the forecaster said.

Temperatures in the city for the coming nine days are expected to range between 24 and 31 degrees.
