China’s Xi Jinping to pay first state visit to US in more than a decade

Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to pay a state visit to the US in September, the first in more than a decade, as the two powers seek stability amid their deepening rivalry.

Shortly after leaving Beijing, where he held a summit with President Xi Jinping, US President Donald Trump told reporters on Air Force One that he and his Chinese counterpart would meet three more times this year.

He said Xi asked him to take part in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, which is scheduled for November. “I’m gonna try to be there,” he said.

He also said Xi wanted to attend the G20 summit in Miami in December, adding: “I’d like him to come.”

At a state banquet in Beijing on Thursday, Trump toasted to his Chinese host and extended an invitation for Xi to visit the White House.

The proposed trip, which Trump said could take place on September 24, would mark the first state visit by a Chinese leader to the US since September 2015.
