On August 26, a massive mudslide and flash flood struck near the border between Tibet, China, and Nepal. On both sides of the Gyirong Port, buildings including the joint inspection facility, commercial warehouses, and nearby villages were almost completely destroyed. Later aerial footage showed the five-story port building, nearly 66 feet tall, collapsing within seconds and leaving only a pit-like foundation. Steel reinforcement bars were all bent in the same direction. If reinforced concrete structures could disappear in an instant, the fate of human lives can only be imagined.
