The 7.1-magnitude earthquake that struck southern Japan has caused at least 25 deaths, and rising temperatures are increasing risks for those stranded without shelter, power, or water.
On July 28, the earthquake rocked Kumamoto Prefecture in Japan’s southern main island of Kyushu.
In the immediate aftermath, roughly 300,000 people were sent to evacuation centers, and the military deployed hundreds of soldiers for rescue operations as aftershocks continued to strike the area.
The quake caused major structural damage to Nippon Paper Industries’ paper mill and a partial collapse of Aeon’s shopping mall, where a gas explosion also occurred.
The mall was full of people at the time of the earthquake, and 3,000 customers had been evacuated to a parking lot before the explosion happened. The explosion occurred in another part of the building, where some staff members were still working….
