China’s economy is sliding, youth unemployment is soaring, and heavy rains in the south have destroyed farmland. Grain security is under pressure. Yet, Beijing suddenly announced it is sending 60,000 tons of rice to Cuba. The first 15,000 tons have already arrived in Havana. The remaining 45,000 tons are being shipped in batches by ocean freighters. China’s ambassador to Cuba called this “the largest food aid in recent years.”
