Why Iran’s ambassador to China thinks the US can’t turn Beijing against it

Iran does not believe the United States has the leverage to turn Beijing against Tehran, the Iranian ambassador to China has said.

Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli’s remarks come amid speculation that Washington may offer Beijing trade concessions or tariff relief in exchange for pressuring Iran into accepting a peace deal during US President Donald Trump’s expected trip to China next week.

“Iran and China … share very common views on issues such as security, peace, development in the region and in the world,” Fazli told reporters in Beijing on Friday.

“And in view of such deeply rooted relations … we never consider the possibility that the US would be able to put any pressure on China and change their stance and view concerning their relations with Iran.”

The embassy has held regular press briefings to address developments in the Middle East since the US and Israel launched their military campaign against Iran in late February.
