In March 2026, Chinese domestic networks were buzzing with reports claiming that “Saudi Arabia and China have officially signed a contract worth up to $4.2 billion to jointly build a full industrial chain for laser weaponry.” The reports also stated that the “Silent Hunter” laser weapons previously exported to Saudi Arabia had a “zero return rate,” making “decades of American efforts a laughingstock.”
But a quick look into international sources reveals an unusual phenomenon: For this so-called “shocking $4.2 billion deal,” neither mainstream international news agencies such as Reuters and Bloomberg nor global military authorities like Janes Defence Weekly or Defense News have reported a single word on the topic. Moreover, no traces of this supposed agreement can be found on official channels from the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) or the Saudi Ministry of Defense.
In the global firearms market, a $4.2 billion air defense system purchase and the transfer of a full industrial chain would be enough to alter the military balance in the Middle East, a breaking news event capable of triggering a geopolitical earthquake. It would be impossible for such a significant deal to go unnoticed on the global stage. The main reason for media outlets turning a “collective blind eye” is obvious: This contract does not exist at all. It appears to be nothing more than a fabrication by domestic Chinese media, with the Chinese military propaganda machine either complicit or even encouraging this fraudulent spectacle, effectively “exporting” a lie for domestic consumption.
