While this announcement may have seemed routine, it caused a major stir within the Chinese political system and among the overseas Chinese community. Zhou was no ordinary financial official; he was once the personal secretary to Wang Qishan, a former member of the Politburo Standing Committee, and known as the “anti-corruption czar.” Zhou was also rumored to be a central figure in Wang’s inner circle, often referred to as his “godson.”
