About 100 federalised California National Guard members were deployed in Oregon after a court barred US President Donald Trump from sending Oregon National Guard troops to Portland and state officials objected to their presence.

The troops arrived Saturday night with no prior notice to state officials, and more troops were likely on the way, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek said in a statement on Sunday.

Kotek, a Democrat, issued a statement after California Governor Gavin Newsom announced he would sue to block the total deployment of 300 of his Guard troops to neighbouring Oregon.

The Trump administration has said that federalised troops are needed to protect immigration officers from protesters in Democratic-run cities, even as local officials said demonstrations have been modest and largely peaceful.

“There is no need for military intervention in Oregon,” Kotek said in the statement. “There is no insurrection in Portland. No threat to national security. Oregon is our home, not a military target.”
