Hong Kong’s weather forecaster cancelled all rainstorm warning signals on Monday, several hours after squally thunderstorms forced education authorities to suspend all morning and whole-day classes.

The Hong Kong Observatory issued the second amber warning of the day at 10.20am and cancelled it at 11.45am. The first one was cancelled at 7.20am, more than an hour after it was issued in replacement of a red signal raised at 1.15am.

At 5.30am, the Education Bureau said: “As the red rainstorm warning signal is now in force, classes of all morning and whole-day schools are suspended [on Monday].

“Schools should implement contingency plans and arrange staff to look after students who might arrive and ensure that conditions are safe before allowing students to return home.”

But it added that if the warning was lowered to amber at or before 10.30am, afternoon classes would proceed as usual unless advised otherwise.
