On July 28, Xinghai County in Hainan Prefecture, Qinghai Province, was hit by three shallow earthquakes above magnitude 5 in just one day. In areas around Wenquan Township near the epicenter, large-scale landslides and mountain collapses occurred. Videos posted online showed clouds of dust shooting into the sky, with sections of mountains collapsing in seconds, “as if the mountains were smoking.”
