On July 5th, Alibaba’s Taobao Flash Sale and Ele.me suddenly launched “Flash Sale Day” with huge subsidies. Discounts like “spend 25 and get 21 off” and “spend 16 and get 16 off” mean you can almost eat for free. The news blew up online, and many people shared their orders, showing “milk tea for 0 yuan” and “burgers for 4 yuan.”
That day, Meituan quickly responded by upping their discounts to “spend 19, get 19 off.” They had a ton of “0 yuan” offers too, and their order volume broke a record—over 120 million orders! It even caused their app to crash for a while.
Later that evening, Meituan announced on Weibo that due to a sudden surge in orders, they had to temporarily protect their servers. For customers who couldn’t place orders, the coupon expiration would be extended. Since the majority of coupons were for bubble tea chains, stores like Mixue Ice Cream, Cha Baidao, Starbucks, and Luckin Coffee were flooded with orders.
