A No 3 typhoon warning in Hong Kong could be lowered and replaced by a strong monsoon signal on Sunday afternoon, as Tropical Storm Wutip continues to weaken and move away from the city, the local forecaster has said.
The Hong Kong Observatory said that the storm was expected to further weaken as it continued moving inland over Guangdong and reached Jiangxi province, while noting outer rain bands were still affecting Hong Kong.
“With the gradual departure of Wutip, the Observatory will consider replacing the tropical cyclone warning signal with a strong monsoon signal between 3pm and 6pm this afternoon,” it said.
Gusts exceeding 100km/h (62mph) were recorded at Ngong Ping shortly before noon on Sunday, with sustained winds at the station measuring 83km/h, the forecaster said.

It noted that the maximum sustained wind speeds recorded at Waglan Island and Green Island were 61km/h and 56km/h, respectively.
