It is not officially called the State of the Union, a title reserved for a US president’s annual address to Congress during other years of an administration. But it is an opportunity for Trump to lay out his priorities for the year.

His speech at the US Capitol after 9pm (10am Wednesday Hong Kong time) comes just six weeks after his inauguration and four years since his supporters stormed the building following his 2020 election defeat.

Trump’s theme will be the “renewal of the American dream”, and he is expected to set out what he views as his key achievements, including a record blitz of executive orders and an assault on the federal bureaucracy led by Elon Musk, the world’s richest man.

Trump is also expected to set out his vision on the economy – even as the trade war he launched against Canada, China and Mexico roils world markets and threatens to raise prices at home.
