At 45, Mr. Wang struggled to find a job. He applied for positions suitable for him, such as a cleaner, security guard, or waiter, but was repeatedly rejected due to his age or failing medical exams.
With nowhere else to turn, Mr. Wang thought of Foxconn. Foxconn’s hiring policy stands out in China’s job market for being particularly open and inclusive, not discriminating against job seekers over 35 years old. Anyone under 48 can apply, with no requirements for education, height, or gender, as long as they have basic literacy skills. Mr. Wang finally found a place for himself. Although the work was hard and the pay was not as good as before, at least he had a stable source of income.
Mr. Wang’s experience of finding work at Foxconn actually reflects a thought-provoking phenomenon. Why, in a sluggish economic environment, can this foreign company, which is in the process of divesting, still provide a large number of jobs for middle-aged people?
