Hong Kong’s leader has pledged to deepen the city’s international ties through consolidating traditional markets in the West while exploring emerging ones, a day after the country’s top legislature highlighted the hub’s role in similar terms.

Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu reiterated his goal on Thursday as he shared his takeaways from the “two sessions”, the country’s largest annual political gathering in Beijing.
In his government work report delivered the day before, Chinese Premier Li Qiang said Hong Kong and Macau should deepen their international exchanges and cooperation, grow their economies and improve livelihoods amid what he called an “increasingly complex and severe external environment”.
Lee on Thursday pledged to fully implement the “spirit of the two sessions”.
“[We must] further deepen international exchanges and cooperation, and strengthen our bridging role of internal cohesion and external outreach [for the country],” Lee said in a Facebook post on Thursday.

Rehashing his view of Hong Kong as an important “superconnector” and “super value-adder” between the mainland and the world, Lee said the city would continue to enhance its international influence and explore more business opportunities as it faced profound changes in the internal and external environment.
