US president-elect Donald Trump is naming long-time adviser Stephen Miller, an immigration hardliner, to be the deputy chief of policy in his new administration.

Vice-President-elect J.D. Vance posted a message of congratulations on Monday to Miller on social media and said: “This is another fantastic pick by the president.”
The announcement was first reported by CNN.
Miller was a senior adviser in Trump’s 2017-2021 presidency and has been a central figure in many of his policy decisions, notably his move to separate thousands of immigrant families as a deterrence programme in 2018.
Policies included construction of a wall on the US-Mexico border, banning people from certain Muslim-majority nations and elsewhere, and a contentious 2018 border policy that separated thousands of migrant families.
Miller helped craft many of Trump’s hardline speeches and plans on immigration.
