The Hong Kong Observatory could issue the No 3 typhoon warning on Monday evening, as Tropical Storm Fengshen edges closer to the city.

The forecaster also said it would issue the strong monsoon signal on Sunday evening as local winds strengthened under the influence of a northeastern monsoon.

“With Fengshen edging closer to the coast of Guangdong gradually [on Monday], the Observatory will consider issuing the strong wind signal, No 3, directly to replace the strong monsoon signal around [Monday] evening,” it said.

“Under the combined effect of Fengshen and the monsoon, it will be persistently windy and will become cloudy with rain in the next few days. Rain will be more frequent at times on Tuesday and early Wednesday.”

Fengshen, which means “the god of wind” in Chinese, is expected to develop into a typhoon and skirt Hong Kong at a distance of about 400km (248 miles) on Tuesday morning, before weakening and moving southwesterly towards Vietnam.
