A significant number of ferry trips from Hong Kong to mainland China have been cancelled due to expected thunderstorms hitting the city on Saturday afternoon.

The Hong Kong Observatory reported that a cold front moving southward from northern Guangdong province was bringing showers and squally thunderstorms closer to the Pearl River Delta.
It warned that the rain would be heavy in some areas, with potentially violent gusts later in the afternoon and into the evening.
“Showers would be heavier in some areas and there might also be violent gusts later in the afternoon to around the evening,” the Observatory said.
“Winds will strengthen significantly, occasionally reaching gale force offshore and on high ground.”

As the cold front moves across coastal areas, local winds will shift to a northerly direction, causing a significant drop in temperature. The forecaster noted that it was “relatively rare” for the northeast monsoon to be this strong in April.
