On September 16, 2025, Breaking Defense reported that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is actively courting Pacific Island nations, including the Solomon Islands, the host of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF). Due to successful pressure from China, Taiwan, the United States, and Japan were excluded from the meeting held from September 8 to 12, 2025.
Before the PIF meeting began, President Surangel Whipps Jr. of Palau, one of the PIF member states, criticized Beijing’s attempts to undermine Palau’s leadership and weaken the public’s confidence in its government. Speaking in Hawaii on September 8, he pointed out that China had even sent drugs to the Pacific Island nation, trying to destabilize society. He compared this tactic to China’s actions in the Golden Triangle region, where it uses drugs, gambling, prostitution, human trafficking, and organ trade to manipulate local governments and control entire regions.
