Soft rock duo Air Supply to headline Hong Kong’s New Year countdown celebrations

Australian soft rock duo Air Supply will headline Hong Kong’s New Year countdown after the fireworks show was cancelled, with authorities expecting more than 11 million travellers to cross the city’s borders during the festive period.

The government also said on Tuesday that they were in discussions with the Shenzhen government to extend border crossing hours on New Year’s Eve, pending approval from the national port authorities.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board announced on Tuesday that Air Supply will perform at the countdown event on December 31, alongside Cantopop singers Jay Fung and Cloud Wan.

“The event will feature a brand-new format combining live performances by renowned singers and a light show, aiming to spread positive energy and heartfelt blessings,” it said.

The 40-minute event will take place at the Chater Road pedestrian zone in Central.

The facades of eight buildings in the business district will also be illuminated with immersive light projections of a giant countdown clock and festive patterns, forming a three-minute light display themed “New Hopes, New Beginnings”.

Last week, the board announced that the New Year’s Eve fireworks display at Victoria Harbour would be cancelled but did not give a reason for the decision.
