Search under way for man, 38, who failed to return rented canoe in Hong Kong

A search is under way for a man who was reported missing after failing to return a rented canoe in Hong Kong’s Sai Kung, according to police.

The force said on Wednesday that it received a report from an employee of a boat rental company in Sha Ha in Sai Kung at around 7pm the previous day. The employee said that the foreign man, 38, had not returned as scheduled and was believed to be missing.

Police, the Fire Services Department, Marine Department and Government Flying Service are involved in what has been classified as a search and rescue operation in Hong Kong waters.

According to real-time flight track map Flightradar24, the search area covered multiple islands, including Tiu Chung Chau, Yeung Chau, Cham Tau Chau and Pak Sha Chau.

The missing man is about 1.7 metres tall with a slim build. He was last seen carrying a backpack and wearing dark clothes, a red life jacket and sports shoes, according to the force.
