On Friday, the Chinese headquarters of the Russian Academy of Engineering said it had taken note of the case against Guo Wei, and was verifying information regarding his election as a foreign academician earlier this year, according to its statement posted on WeChat.

The academy then confirmed to Beijing News that Guo’s status as a foreign academician had been temporarily suspended following a review of materials he had submitted as part of the election process, according to a report by the state-owned news agency on Sunday.

It said that information about Guo, who was the chief scientist at the Jiangsu University of Science and Technology, had been temporarily removed from the academy’s official website and that the results of the review would be released in future.

The South China Morning Post was not able to reach the academy’s office in Moscow by phone.
