Hongkongers running in Sunday’s annual marathon should brace for cold weather as the temperature is set to drop to as low as 10 degrees Celsius (50 Fahrenheit) on race day, before climbing again next week.

The Observatory on Thursday said that an intense winter monsoon would reach the coast of southern China tomorrow morning, with temperatures forecast to reach their lowest point on Sunday, when the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon is scheduled.
“The weather will be cold in the morning and at night over the region, and very cold over inland areas over the weekend,” the forecaster said.
Temperatures will range between 13 and 18 degrees on Friday and are expected to drop throughout the day and into Saturday, the Observatory said,
By the marathon on Sunday, the mercury is forecast to range between 10 and 16 degrees. The Observatory said that it would be cooler in the morning and “very dry” during the day.

A sports expert told the Post ahead of last year’s marathon that cooler conditions were ideal for athletes, and that the best temperature range for running was between 10 and 15 degrees.
