Raging Sea Horse threatens to sue Hong Kong watchdog over low mattress score

Local bedding company Sea Horse has threatened legal action against Hong Kong’s consumer watchdog for giving one of its mattresses the lowest score out of 14 sampled and describing it as “very hard,” stressing its ultra-firm range was developed after extensive research and testing.

The company on Wednesday slammed a recent mattress test by the Consumer Council, calling it unfair, biased and lacking transparency, resulting in misleading conclusions that negatively affected the brand’s reputation.

“We demand that the Consumer Council takes steps to rectify the situation. Should this issue remain unresolved, we reserve all legal rights to safeguard our brand’s reputation,” Sea Horse director and CEO Chow Yuen-mei warned.

“The selection of samples was fundamentally flawed as it compared specialised products with general-use mattresses. Our brand offers a diverse range of mattresses, including those designed to meet standard consumer preferences with a well-balanced combination of softness and firmness.”

She questioned why the council did not select one of its more representative products for testing instead of an ultra-firm mattress designed for specific groups such as the elderly, post-partum mothers and individuals with back problems.

“Applying general mattress comfort standards to a product tailored for a niche demographic is neither appropriate nor fair,” Chow said.
