Qantas, Virgin, British, and Royal Brunei Airlines Pull Out of China; What’s Going On?

British Airways has been operating in mainland China for 44 years, but is now temporarily bidding farewell to Beijing. Following announcements by Qantas and Virgin Atlantic suspending certain routes to and from China, British Airways has become the third airline to halt its services.
The reason for the suspension is the low number of passengers. According to insiders, the recovery of business passengers on BA’s London-Beijing route has been poor, with numbers only reaching 30%-50% of pre-pandemic levels depending on the season.
According to flight schedules analyzed by Reuters and Cirium, foreign airlines are only operating 60% of the flights they did before the pandemic, indicating that foreign airlines are withdrawing from the Chinese market.
