Over 100 Hongkongers report mild tremors after magnitude 6 quake hits Taiwan

More than 100 Hong Kong residents reported feeling mild tremors after a magnitude 6 earthquake struck Taiwan shortly after midnight on Tuesday.

The Hong Kong Observatory said the quake hit at 12.17am at a depth of around 10km (6 miles), with the epicentre located south-southeast of Jiayi and about 670km east of Hong Kong.

It added it received more than 100 reports from residents of minor shaking that lasted several seconds.

The weather forecaster classified the shaking in Hong Kong as a local intensity of three on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale. This indicates that the tremors could be felt indoors, resembling vibrations caused by passing light trucks.

No deaths have been reported so far as rescuers are still assessing the damage.

Taiwan’s fire department said 15 people were sent to hospital with minor injuries. Among them were six people, including a child, who were rescued from a collapsed house in Nanxi District, Tainan City.
