Operation Santa Claus: Hong Kong hotel’s panda keychains bring hope to those in need

Tiny panda keychains are spreading festive cheer at Kowloon Shangri-La as the hotel supports Operation Santa Claus (OSC), which is raising funds this year for 13 Hong Kong charities and survivors of last month’s Tai Po fire.

The Tsim Sha Tsui hotel has created limited-edition keychains featuring tiny Edward Panda and Ellie Panda soft toys – each dressed in red hats and red Shangri-La uniforms – that are being sold in aid of the annual charity initiative.

All proceeds from the sale of the HK$160 (US$20) keychains from now until January 1 will go to OSC.

“For every panda toy purchased by a guest, we are creating a direct link between their holiday celebration and a life-changing service for children, the elderly, or those with disabilities in our city,” Christopher Chia, the hotel’s general manager, said.

He added that throughout the holiday season, the hotel would host a wide range of attractions that shared the theme of Enchanted Wonders to help promote families, joy and a sense of togetherness.

The hotel cancelled its traditional Christmas tree lighting ceremony as a mark of respect following the Tai Po tragedy. “We extend our condolences to the bereaved families and all those affected,” the hotel said.
