According to Daily NK, the flooding along the Yalu River caused extensive damage to homes in parts of North Pyongan Province and Ryanggang Province. The Pyongyang authorities mobilized over 120,000 people within four months to undertake large-scale reconstruction efforts. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally promised to initiate an astonishing “North Korean speed,” completing disaster-resistant housing in just four months, designed to last 50 to 100 years. North Korean state media loudly claimed that the affected areas had been transformed into “model socialist villages admired by the world.” But many residents are concerned about the quality of the buildings, given that high-rise buildings were rapidly constructed in just three to four months.
