On the evening of August 12, a section of the Beiru River embankment in Changqiao Town, Pingdingshan City, Henan Province suddenly collapsed due to continued heavy rainfall and large-scale water discharge from upstream reservoirs. The breach was more than 40 meters wide. Videos circulating online showed floodwaters rushing through the opening, quickly submerging large areas of farmland and nearby villages. The scene appeared like a vast sea of water.
