New Hong Kong industrial park eyes edge in smart manufacturing, Chinese medicine

Hong Kong’s Hung Shui Kiu industrial park will leverage its location advantage to focus on advanced manufacturing, including proprietary Chinese medicine products, in a bid to differentiate itself from the San Tin Technopole, according to development authorities.

While the government has yet to set key performance indicators (KPIs) for the company operating the park, a top development official said on Tuesday that the firm was expected to be financially independent and accountable to the Legislative Council for the economic growth it generated.

“We hope to position ourselves as a smart, advanced manufacturing hub,” Doris Ho Pui-ling, permanent secretary for development, told a radio show.

“Some industries have indicated interest in settling in Hung Shiu Kiu, including manufacturers of environmentally friendly concrete and proprietary Chinese medicine.”

Unlike the nearby San Tin Technopole, which focuses on innovation and technology (I&T), the Hung Shui Kiu site will leverage its proximity to the Shenzhen Bay border and the Hong Kong International Airport, according to Ho.

She also said that Hong Kong was already home to some big proprietary Chinese medicine brands that were looking to expand their production lines and tap into the mainland Chinese market.
