New Central Kowloon Bypass, transport links to boost Hong Kong’s competitiveness: Paul Chan

Hong Kong’s newly opened Central Kowloon Bypass, along with a planned major road and rail expansion of over 40 per cent in the next few years, will boost the city’s competitiveness and integration with national development, the finance chief has said.

Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po also said on Sunday that the deeper integration of transport infrastructure between Hong Kong and its neighbouring cities in the Greater Bay Area would enhance connectivity and the efficient flow of people and logistics.

In his weekly blog, Chan highlighted the opening of the new Yau Ma Tei section of the Central Kowloon Bypass as a turning point for the city’s east-west connectivity.

He added that upon the completion of the Kowloon Bay section next year, the route would merge with the Tseung Kwan O–Lam Tin Tunnel to form Route 6, becoming the third trunk road to span across Kowloon.

“By then, the travel time between Tseung Kwan O and Yau Ma Tei will be drastically reduced from the current 65 minutes to about 12 minutes,” Chan said.

The finance chief underscored that a smart, green and efficient transport infrastructure network played an important role in continuously improving the quality of life for residents and promoting social and economic development.
