Ne Zha 2 has smashed records since its mainland release in January, grossing more than 15 billion yuan (US$2.1 billion) worldwide as of Saturday, according to Xinhua, which cited Chinese box office tracker Maoyan.
The film, adapted from Chinese mythology, is the highest grossing animated movie of all time and the first in history to break the US$2 billion mark.
The film has raked in at least HK$40.7 million (US$5.1 million) in Hong Kong since its release on February 22, according to the Trade Development Council.
Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu on Sunday posted a photo on social media of him and his wife Janet Lee Lam Lai-sim standing in front of posters of the film, and said he recently watched it and was inspired by Ne Zha’s indomitable spirit and fearlessness in the face of difficulties.

He quoted a line by Ne Zha in the film: “If there is no road ahead, I will make one!”
“Just as Hong Kong has made great efforts to reform in recent years and has continuously solved long-pending problems one after another, my team and I are also fearless and have solved them one by one, demonstrating our breakthrough thinking,” Lee said.
