Lifts in another 39 buildings found to be lacking proper components

Hong Kong authorities have found that lifts in another 39 buildings are lacking proper door-frame components following an investigation into faulty replacement works carried out by a contractor involving missing fire-safety parts.

The South China Morning Post also learned on Friday that police had arrested a director and two registered lift engineers from the lift contractor, Taizoom Elevator, on suspicion of deception over work at 48 lifts at two housing estates.

The latest incidents come just months after a fiasco involving lifts at a new hospital block, with experts saying on Friday that a thorough review of the regulatory process could be needed.

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department said it had launched inspections of lifts installed by Taizoom across Hong Kong. As of 2pm on Friday, it said it had inspected 39 buildings including one in a housing estate. The other 38 were stand-alone buildings.
