As the geopolitical tensions between China and the United States intensified, Hong Kong’s wealthiest individual, Li Ka-shing, made a move that angered Chinese President Xi Jinping. His company, CK Hutchison Holdings Ltd., decided to sell 43 of its port operations, sparking outrage within the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The sale has caused a public uproar, with Chinese media criticizing Li for “betraying all Chinese people.” On March 19, reports emerged that the CCP’s Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office had ordered the Hong Kong government to restrict the exit of all senior executives involved in the deal. Even members of Li’s family were placed under surveillance and barred from leaving the region.
