Gold-digger, or “lao nu” as it’s called in mainland China, is a term used for women who abandon their dignity and use their bodies and souls to get money. The term originated in Guangdong, where local people referred to outsiders trying to make a living in Guangdong as “lao song,” or “brothers” in Mandarin. It later evolved to refer to women from other provinces who spoke Mandarin and were seen as vain, wanting to take advantage of others for financial gain.
