Large-Scale Chinese Worker Strikes in Egypt; Companies in Indonesia, Brazil, Africa Default on Wages

Chinese workers blocked the entrance of the China-funded Central Business District (CBD) project in Egypt’s New Administrative Capital on January 25, demanding months of unpaid wages. Despite the project nearing completion, workers have not received their salaries, and with Lunar New Year approaching, they are desperate to return home with their earnings.
The CBD project is a flagship initiative under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the largest project undertaken by China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) in Egypt. Like many other BRI projects, most workers were recruited from China, and the practice of wage arrears persists.
