Hong Kong Palace Museum has unveiled its first outdoor public art exhibition featuring six large art installations expected to attract at least 500,000 visitors during their year-long display.

Museum director Louis Ng Chi-wa said the exhibition was a continuation of its previous attempts to have Hong Kong artists engage in a dialogue with tradition through contemporary art.

The exhibition, themed on traditional Chinese garden aesthetics, features sculptures and multimedia works by six local artists including Rocco Yim Sen-kee, the architect behind the Hong Kong Palace Museum building.

The artworks will be displayed across the museum’s plaza from Saturday until November 2 next year.

“This is the first exhibition in our outdoor public square. The special part about this event is that the public can visit it without having to buy a ticket,” he said.

Ng noted that some visitors, especially from mainland China, would only take photos in the public square due to limited time in the city.

“This exhibition allows them to experience our exhibits even if they only visit the public square,” he said. “We predict that at least 500,000 to 600,000 people will view these works over the next year.”
