‘Jealous brother’ bit baby, dropped him before his death, Hong Kong court told

A man accused with his wife of murdering their seven-week-old son in 2019 told police that the baby’s brother had dropped him on the floor and often rushed to bite him when he was being breastfed, attempting to hurt him out of jealousy, a Hong Kong court heard on Wednesday.

The High Court heard that Imran Hossain, 32, told investigators that his elder son Farhan, who was about two years old in 2019, had strived for his parents’ attention after the birth of his brother Iyman that July.

Imran and his wife Farzana Akter, 29, told police that they suspected Iyman’s fatal injuries were caused by Farhan, who had jumped from a suitcase onto the bed and hurt the baby on August 24, 2019.

Iyman, who suffered multiple thigh and rib fractures and brain damage, died six days later in hospital.

His parents have been charged with a joint count of murder and another of child cruelty. They have both pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Prosecutors accused the couple of trying to paint Farhan as a jealous and naughty son and of lying about the attack they had inflicted on the baby.
