Rodrigo Duterte, the former president of the Philippines, will remain in detention in The Hague, appeals judges at the International Criminal Court ruled on Friday, dismissing defence arguments the 80-year-old should be released due to his advanced age and alleged declining health.
Presiding judge Luz del Carmen Ibanez Carranza told a hearing that it was “necessary” Duterte remain in detention as the conditions proposed by his lawyers did not meet the conditions for parole.
Duterte is accused of crimes against humanity during his war on drugs.
