Hongkongers should consider taking trains to the airport on Sunday as some roads on Lantau Island will be closed for a cross-border cycling race, the organiser of the test event for next year’s National Games has said.

The race will also cause hours-long closures to parts of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge and some border crossing facilities.
“When the convoy enters the North Lantau Highway, the Hong Kong side will implement rolling traffic controls, where traffic will be stopped before the convoy arrives and it will be resumed once the convoy passes,” National Games Coordination Office head Yeung Tak-keung said on Wednesday.
“Due to the traffic control arrangements, we expect that the travelling time on the North Lantau Highway to the airport will be increased by about 30 minutes,” he said.
“I urge residents and tourists to plan their trips early, spare enough time for their travel and try their best to use railway services. Avoid driving to Disneyland, Tung Chung or Hong Kong International Airport as the race is taking place.”

The 2024 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau road cycling race will be held between 9am and 2pm on Sunday, with 71 riders taking the 230km route through Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau.
Athletes will start at the Zhuhai Museum, before heading to Macau and then Hong Kong via the mega bridge, the world’s longest sea crossing. They will ride along the North Lantau Highway, passing Disneyland and then back to the bridge to reach the small island of Hengqin before returning to the starting point.
