Hongkonger arrested after man dies in suspected drink spiking

A Hongkonger has been arrested on suspicion of administering drugs to obtain or facilitate an unlawful sexual act following the death of a 49-year-old man who allegedly consumed a spiked drink.

Initial investigations suggested the victim consumed a drug-laced energy drink before the suspect, 51, had sex with him in a public housing flat in Hung Hom, the Post learned on Thursday.

A source familiar with the case said the pair were having a sex party with another man at the flat at the time.

Emergency personnel were called to the flat in Hung Hom Estate on Dyer Avenue after receiving a report that a man collapsed at around 10am on Tuesday.

The victim was transported to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei, where he was pronounced dead, according to the force.

Police said a small quantity of what appeared to be crystal meth, also known as Ice, was found inside the flat.

“Preliminary investigations suggested the victim consumed a drink suspected to contain an illicit drug,” police said.

On the same day, officers arrested two men, aged 51 and 54, in the same district.

The younger suspect was detained on suspicion of administering drugs to obtain or facilitate an unlawful sex act, trafficking in a dangerous drug and consumption of a narcotic. The other was apprehended on suspicion of drug consumption.

The two suspects were still being held for questioning as of Thursday morning.

Another source said an autopsy would be carried out to determine whether the cause of death was due to a drug overdose or if the victim had a medical condition.

The insider said one of the arrestees was the flat’s tenant, adding the three men knew each other.

An investigation by detectives from the Kowloon City district crime squad is still under way, according to the force.

In Hong Kong, administering drugs to obtain or facilitate an unlawful sexual act is punishable by up to 14 years in prison under the Crimes Ordinance.
