Hongkonger, 76, on London-bound Cathay flight injured after hand baggage falls and hits her head

A 76-year-old Hong Kong woman aboard a London-bound Cathay Pacific flight has been injured after a piece of cabin baggage fell from an overhead compartment and struck her.

Police received a report at 11.22pm on Monday the passenger sustained a head injury on the flight departing Hong Kong International Airport to London Heathrow Airport.

The Fire Service Department logged the incident at 11.19pm.

The woman required medical help at the airport, the force said on Tuesday.

According to the Airport Authority website, flight CX255, which was originally set to depart at 11.15pm on Monday, took off at 12.06am early on Tuesday.

A Cathay spokesman said the woman’s injury might have been caused by a misplaced baggage item in the overhead compartment.

“Our cabin crew and ground staff immediately called for assistance, sent the passenger to a nearby hospital for further medical care,” he said.

The company also cancelled the flight for the passenger and her family members, and arranged for them to stay at an airport hotel, the spokesman said.

The airline would follow up with the passenger and provide necessary assistance, he added.
